KOKODA TESTIMONIAL

Journey of a lifetime............ I have just experienced what has become one of the defining points in my life – walking the Kokoda track with the North Ballarat Football Club. Walking the Kokoda track was not on my ‘to do’ list but I find myself telling everyone I meet (and who I think can do it) that this is a ‘must do’ life choice. Our preparation with was sensational – we had organised group training sessions which ran three times a week for 8 weeks prior to our departure. We did group hikes that pushed us well out of our comfort zones, leaving us wondering what we had signed up for! There were open discussions about what we needed, how we would handle different situations. Walking the track itself is an experience that will stay with me forever. Kokoda is a sensational personal challenge that takes you away from your life expectations and puts you squarely back on even ground.  There are no short cuts walking Kokoda. There are no easy days. There are no life comforts. What you get is a sense of being able to do anything you want in life and a realisation that life really is one foot in front of the other each and every day. Walking the Kokoda is a once in a life opportunity and doing it with a team that you have faith in and who push you to your personal limits is the way to experience this.  I highly recommend the North Ballarat Football Club to anyone thinking about this challenge. There is no way I would have enjoyed this trip as I did had it not been for being involved with the Club and the strong leadership provided. I recommend you contact Justin at the Club on 5339 0925 for further information – the experience will change your life!

Come and join us trekking Kokoda next year in either March or November. The cost is $5900 and is all inclusive of the below list, including the training which is not only crucial form a physical point but also for a mental point. We place a massive emphasis on hydration and mental toughness as this plays an important role in the trek. The trip does not include travel insurance approx $100 (as we found we were doubling up on this as a lot of trekkers had it on their home or credit card insurance) and two meals in Port Moresby and Visa upon arrival in Port Moresby approx A$50.

We only travel with Qantas and Air New Guinea which is co-share with Qantas, therefore ensuring their responsibility for any cancellations. We can secure cheaper travel through Virgin or Jetstar, however most times the connecting flights have you stay in Cairns for a night adding one day and also accommodation costs to the trip. Also if you miss your connecting flight through cancellation or delay you may miss the trek all together (this has happened). Also with Qantas you are served meals at no cost and receive frequent flyer points.

Unlike many of the trips you are not required to carry or cook your own food, a lot of companies have the trekkers carry their own food which enables them to cut down on the amount of porters needed. We also walk the track from Kokoda to Owers corner (as the diggers defended it) not the other way, Owers to Kokoda. It is actually more expensive to walk the track this way as we have to fly in our food from Port Moresby to Kokoda, which is obviously adds airline freight costs than to bus it to Owers, however walking the track from Kokoda to Owers gives you a closer experience of how our diggers defended the track.

One of the main reasons many trekkers fail to accomplish Kokoda is not only the unforgiving terrain, but also the mental battle you mind goes through. If you decide to go ahead with the trek we will put your through an intense 8 week training program not only physical but also mentally and provide you with knowledge to help conquer the track. We will train 3 times per week for 8 weeks with the times determined by the group; example as follows:

  • Monday 1 hour
  • Wednesday 1 hour
  • Friday 1 hour

ALTERNATE WEEK

  • Saturday or Sunday between 4-8 hours trek

In order to secure your spot we require a non-refundable deposit of $1500. This deposit is nonrefundable as it used to secure your airfare & permits and once the ticket has been issued it is non transferable. If you decide not to travel you can still use the ticket or if you cannot travel for medical reasons and as long as you have travel insurance you will be covered. You can make your deposit through Justin at The Roosters on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I have attached information regarding Kokoda, however there is a lot more info you will need to know that I can fill you in on, such as vaccinations, clothing, equipment, brands, first aid, shoes, toiletries etc... but I can fill you in at a later stage. We also have an arrangement with Anaconda, where we go into the store as a group and we give you advise on what brands and models are suitable or not and you also receive 20% discount on any items purchased (excluding sales).

Kokoda is an ultimate challenge of trekking – and with the best preparation and support available we will ensure you not only finish the adventure, you have the time of your life! PNG’s Kokoda Track is one of the hardest treks you will find with 96 kilometres of mountainous walking “straight up or straight down” in high humidity and difficult conditions. However the memories and sense of achievement will stay with you for your lifetime.

Don’t worry about your fitness as this is what the training is for. During the pre trip training we will guide you through the intensive, specialised training program (not simply a boot-camp) three times a week for eight weeks including all day hikes and travel. The Kokoda training will focus on strength, endurance and overall aerobic / anaerobic fitness and will provide necessary training for those taking on the Kokoda challenge.

The trek isn’t easy although and to actually enjoy the experience and get the most out of the gruelling eight-day hike, adventurers needed a specific training program to increase their fitness levels and help ensure they finish the trip. It’s tough but it’s a fantastic challenge, an amazing experience to witness what our diggers did and we offer the best support you can get before and during the trek.

The weather on the track is unpredictable and you have to be prepared for anything. All your guides are qualified and speak English, with one porter  accompanying each person to assist carrying tents, cooking and other necessary equipment. We have a satellite telephone in which we make contact back to Australia each night to update our website and keep your family and friends notified of your safety and adventure, comprehensive emergency plans, current first aid, insurance and thorough knowledge of the PNG area, having taken more than 200 clients along the infamous track with a 100% success rate. The package includes all flights, meals, taxes, accommodation and the all-important pre-trekking training program. During the adventure, we will also take you through the history and significance of each part of the trail, telling the story of each infamous battle along the way.

You can visit our partners website www.omalleyfitness.com.au who has a Kokoda forum and you can ask any questions or queries from previous trekkers or contact Justin at The Roosters for further details and information.
