Marc Greig

A desire to coach led former North Ballarat vice captain Marc Greig back to the Wimmera. Greig, formerly of Horsham District League club Kalkee, is approaching his second season leading Warrack Eagles in Wimmera Football League.

He joined the club in November 2005 after seven seasons and 110 senior games with the Roosters.

"I wanted a good chance to coach and Warrack Eagles stood out because they have such a good junior system which has been successful with good kids coming through,'' he said.

"It's been a good transition from VFL player to senior coach considering I've never done it before.''

Greig said he was faced with a significant dilemma in his first year of coaching.

"I wasn't sure where to play, it was bloody confusing,'' he said.

"I probably played on the ball to start off with but as kids stepped up I gave them an opportunity to play. I went forward and kicked 30 goals for the year which was good after 8 odd years at half back.

"Against the better teams I probably played across half forward and on the ball.''

Greig breathed life into his club and the league in his debut year. His honesty and willingness to speak his mind on topical football issues was refreshing.

"I guess because I still live in Ballarat I didn't have to be in the footy environment all the time,'' he said.

"No use having an opinion if you're not going to say it.''

He is confident his side, who finished eighth last season, can improve and make the finals this year.

"We've got a lot of good young kids coming through, we're definitely on the improve,'' he said.

And can North Ballarat followers expect the Greig of old to return to streaming out of a back pocket?

"Yep, I'm hoping to get back down there on a permanent basis,'' he said.

Greig represented Victoria on three occasions, 2002, 2004 and 2005 and won selection in a back pocket in the Roosters' Team of the Decade.
