North City Football and Netball Club compete in the Ballarat Football League. It fields Senior, Reserves and Under 18 .5 Football Teams, as well as A Grade, B Grade and Under 18.5 Netball Teams.
North City is the senior pathway for players and families of the North Ballarat Junior Football Club (NBJFC).
The Juniors compete in the Ballarat Football League and field football teams in the Under 16.5, Under 15, Under 13.75 (2 Teams) , Under 12 (2 Teams) and Under 10 competitions.
The North Ballarat Junior Football Club is the controlling body of North City as well as North Ballarat Women's Football Team and the North Ballarat Auskick Program. NBJFC in turn comes under the umbrella of the North Ballarat Football Club.
The Juniors have been a powerful and very successful part of the overall Club. NBJFC has won the most premierships (64) in the Ballarat Football League and is the only Club to have won the Merv and Mary Howard Memorial Award (aggregate winner of junior teams) in every year since its inception.
Many of NBJFC’s talented juniors have had the focus and drive to become VFL/AFL champions. The list is long – Greg Burns, Jeff Dunne, Stewart Gull, Dale Lewis, Tony Lockett, Michael Malthouse, Eric Clarke, Marty Cross, Andrew Ford, Allan Hassell, Paul Hills, Allan Jenkin, Gordon Polson, Malcolm Scott and Tristan Cartledge are just a few who have played VFL/AFL football.
Many also went on to play with for the Roosters when they entered the State based competition, VFL, in 1996. Travis, John and Grant Polkinghorne fall into this category. Travis is the senior games record holder for the Club, whilst John is a former VFL captain as well as a SANFL and AFL listed player. John Orr, a Club legend and former senior games record holder is a product of the Juniors, and still coaches the Under 15s to the present day.
There are also a number of former Juniors currently playing in the Roosters VFL side - Ayden George, Ryan Luke and Steve Owen. After the Club’s inaugural year in the VFL (1996), it was decided to no longer field Senior and Reserves teams in the Ballarat Football League. The BFL then decreed that the Club could no longer field an Under 18s side unless it had Senior and Reserve teams. The Club then formed an alliance with the then struggling Redan Football Club, where North Juniors progressed to the Redan 'Roosters' Under 18 side. Redan prospered, with many talented players and families moving to the Club after they finished their time at North Juniors. In 2001 the NBJFC was successful in having their Under 18 side re-instated into the Ballarat Football League. They played on the Daylesford fixture as Daylesford did not have an Under 18 side. Not long after this the North Juniors identified that they were losing families to other Clubs because they did not have a 'pathway' for players who didn’t have the ability or desire to compete at VFL or TAC Cup level. Therefore, after thorough and careful planning and analysis of how best the Club could provide a pathway and development program for its junior players, 'The Pathways' project was born. Talks with the Ballarat Football League (BFL) then commenced and unfortunately the BFL was not in favour of the Club’s pathway program. The NBJFC then set about gaining entry into another league and in late 2005 the Bendigo Football League accepted them into their league, which was a fantastic result for the Club. In order to make a point of difference between the Roosters and Rebels sides, they embarked upon a name search, only to find a name within the Club’s own history. North City was the original name of the North Ballarat Football Club.
North City Football & Netball Club in 2007 successfully gained entry into the Ballarat Football League for the 2008 seasons and beyond - with a number of onerous conditions which can be found by visiting www.northcity.com.au
