BioGerard FitzGerald (born July 25, 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and has had a highly successful career as a coach for the past 30 years.Gerard played three games up forward for Geelong in 1977, before a career-ending knee injury. Gerard had been studying a Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) at the University of Ballarat and, at the age of 23, moved to Sea Lake to take up the position of Head Coach and to begin his teaching career. After teaching in secondary schools throughout provincial Victoria and coaching at a variety of country football clubs, Gerard was offered the position as Head Coach with the VFL team North Ballarat Roosters in 1997. Gerard took over from Alan Ezard as coach of North Ballarat in 1997 and remained with the club until the end of the 2002 season. In November 2002 Gerard was pre-selected as endorsed Liberal Candidate for the seat of Ballarat East but was unsuccessful in the November election. In 2003 he was coach of Sprinvale and the following year coached Port Melbourne. He was in charge of North Ballarat’s TAC Cup side in 2005 and 2006 before returning to their VFL club. FitzGerald steered North Ballarat to their inaugural VFL premiership in 2008. He guided the club to further premierships in 2009 and 2010 to become only the fourth coach in VFL history to coach three successive premierships. Gerard is a highly decorated coach, having been named Coach of the Year four times, as well as coaching the VFL state side four times, a role he views as a great honour. He is the third longest serving coach in the history of the VFL and this year VicHealth awarded the inaugural Lindsay Gaze Sporting Conduct Award to Gerard to recognise his outstanding sportsmanship in attitude and behaviour both on and off the field. |
